Opprop mot nedleggelsen av Manglerud International Classes (MIC)

Kjære beslutningstakere,

Vi, foreldre, elever, lærere og støttespillere, står samlet i et kraftfullt rop om hjelp for Manglerud International Classes (MIC). Utdanningsdirektoratet har, på instruks fra Kunnskapsdepartementet, fattet vedtak om å legge ned det eneste offentlige IB-tilbudet i Oslo. Skolen legges ned 1. august 2026. MIC har siden 2016 vært en viktig ressurs for både norske og internasjonale familier. Nedleggelsen truer ikke bare utdanningsløpet til ca. 235 elever, men også Norges konkurranseevne i kampen om internasjonal kompetanse.

Hvorfor MIC er viktig:

• Unikt tilbud: MIC gir internasjonale familier som kommer til Oslo samt norske familier som forbereder seg på utenlandsopphold, et solid og internasjonalt anerkjent utdanningsløp.
• Konsekvenser for arbeidsmarkedet: Nedleggelsen gjør det vanskeligere for selskaper og institusjoner å tiltrekke seg internasjonal spisskompetanse. Familier som kunne bidra til det norske arbeidsmarkedet, kan bli tvunget til å flytte til land med bedre engelskspråklige skoletilbud.
• Usikkerhet og stress for elever og familier: Elever midt i sitt utdanningsløp må bytte skole, læreplan og språk. Dette skaper betydelig usikkerhet og stress, samtidig som ledige plasser på andre private engelskspråklige skoler i Oslo er svært begrenset.
• Mangfold og inkludering: MIC er et symbol på mangfold og like muligheter. Det offentlige IB-programmet sikrer at alle har tilgang til internasjonalt anerkjent utdanning, uavhengig av økonomi. Andre IB-tilbud i Oslo krever skolepenger, og nedleggelsen kan gjøre det vanskeligere for internasjonale familier å vurdere Oslo som bosted.
• Dokumentert behov: Evalueringen av MIC, gjennomført av Høgskolen i Innlandet, konkluderer med at det er et reelt behov for engelskspråklige tilbud i grunnskolen. Evalueringen understreker at “Oslo kommune, som Norges hovedstad, har et særlig behov for utenlandsk arbeidskraft.”

Vi oppfordrer politikerne til å finne løsninger som viderefører MIC og sikrer et engelskspråklig skoletilbud i den offentlige skolen i Oslo.

Petition Against the Closure of Manglerud International Classes (MIC)

Dear Decision-Makers,

We, parents, students, teachers, and supporters, stand united in a strong appeal for Manglerud International Classes (MIC). The Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, acting on instructions from the Ministry of Education, has decided to close the only public IB programme in Oslo. The school will be closed as of 1 August 2026. Since 2016, MIC has been an important resource for both Norwegian and international families. Its closure threatens not only the educational pathway of approximately 235 students, but also Norway’s competitiveness in attracting and retaining international talent.

Why MIC matters:

• A unique public offering: MIC provides international families moving to Oslo, as well as Norwegian families preparing for assignments abroad, with a coherent and internationally recognised educational pathway.
• Impact on the labour market: Closing MIC will make it more difficult for companies and public institutions to attract highly skilled international professionals. Families who could contribute to the Norwegian workforce may be forced to relocate to countries offering better access to English-language schooling.
• Uncertainty and stress for students and families: Students in the middle of their education are required to change schools, curricula, and language of instruction. This creates significant stress and uncertainty, while available places at other private English-language schools in Oslo are extremely limited.
• Diversity and inclusion: MIC represents diversity and equal opportunity. A public IB programme ensures access to internationally recognised education regardless of family income. Other IB options in the Oslo area require tuition fees, and the closure of MIC may make Oslo a less attractive place to settle for international families.
• Documented need: An evaluation of MIC conducted by Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences concludes that there is a genuine need for English-language provision at primary and lower secondary level. The report emphasises that “Oslo municipality, as Norway’s capital, has a particular need for foreign labour.”

We urge decision-makers to find solutions that allow MIC to continue and that ensure access to English-language education within Oslo’s public school system.
